MEC has Special Interest Groups focusing on a wide range of research initiatives that contribute to quality enhancement of research and innovation within the context of MEC’s vision and strategic plan. Special Interest Groups conduct research which is not only in no hyphenline with MEC practices but also touches daily lives of the citizens of the Sultanate and the global community. In particular, the center plays a crucial role in expediting innovation and development of core research facilities at MEC.

Special Interest Groups:
I. Digital Signal Processing
This group primarily focuses on spectrum of Digital Signal Processing. Arabic Speech Recognition is one of the research problems being explored by the team at present. They are working on developing a speech recognition system that can work for any Omani accent. Also, an Omani Arabic speech database is being created which can be used in speech signal research.

II. Cloud Computing
The aim of the group is to assess the Cloud Computing usability in the Middle East College environment. Users can access cloud computing services from different places by using their PCs or any other devices. It allows the user to access services by using a web browser irrespective of their location or device.  The group is working on setting up a private cloud in the college and then deploying key IT services. Once tested and evaluated, all the major IT services can be deployed on the institution’s private cloud.

III. Funded Research Project
Theme:  Synergies and Innovation Linking Europe, the MENA region and the Gulf in Higher Education & Research
Coordinator: Universitat de Barcelona (Spain)
Objective: Aims at continuing the path opened by the project by consolidating mutual understanding and long term partnerships between the regions, with the EAIE’s collaboration, by:
I. Improving the level of awareness of the Bologna Process in the MENA Countries and in the Gulf 
II. Strengthening relations between Quality assurance and Higher Education and Research
III. Discussing the relationship between the University and Industry in the regions.
IV. Contributing to the interdisciplinary policy debate
V. Ensuring sustainable means of multiplying and disseminating successful experiences of joint actions in the areas of HE and Research
