Middle East College (MEC) has recently announced the new Wi-Fi service; named “Eduroam”; World Wide Education Roaming for Research and Education, as part of its contribution in offering an easy internet access for its students on an international level. Eduroam is a global internet service that enables students, staff and researchers from the participating institutions to use the service in over 6000 eduroam hotspots available at universities, academies, research centers, schools and educational institutions in about 90 countries around the world. The MEC’s members will be able to use the service around the world for free by using their MEC’s emails and usernames.
Wael Shawkat; Head of IT Services at MEC, commented: “Eduroam; by being a global unified Wi-Fi service across campuses and millions of access points across the globe, is authorizing students, researchers and staff to get secure and fast internet connectivity as it acts as a large worldwide Wi-Fi hotspot. The main benefit is not only extending our network to visitors but also allowing our students and staff to access while they are available at other institutions in Oman or abroad. In addition, the new service helps making our campus a more attractive venue to host meetings and conferences, as it permits participants to access the network without need to provide temporary accounts to visiting users”.
MEC is the 3rd institution in the Sultanate to enable “eduroam” service for academic exchange, visiting faculty, academics traveling for conferences and collaborative work, study abroad students, visitors attending events, and anyone who travels to another contributing institution. Moreover, the college is keen to provide the best services to enhance the students’ and staff’s experience at MEC and around the globe.
