‘Automatic daily activity management system for the elderly person’: A winning FURAP project by MEC students

A team consisting of two undergraduate students from Middle East College (MEC) have been awarded by The Research Council of Oman (TRC) under the Faculty Mentored Undergraduate Research Award Programme of TRC (FURAP) during the Annual Research Forum 2017 on the 10th December 2017 for their winning project; entitled ‘Automatic daily activity management system for the elderly person’, under the category ‘Health and Social Services’. The Annual Research Forum was held under the auspices of H. E. Dr Rawya bint Saud Al Busaidi, Minister of Higher Education, Oman and in the presence of eminent dignitaries from different public and private sectors in the Sultanate. The two MEC students; Abir Al Siyabi and Al Anood Al Alawi, specialized in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering have put lots of efforts in the project which was done under the mentorship of Dr. Sumesh Eratt Parameswaran, Faculty in Electronics and Communication Engineering Department at MEC. 

The students were inspired with the project’s idea by the high an increased percentage of the Omani old people who are no longer able to work or serve themselves where there are around 700 elderly people here in Muscat only. The students’ project aims at providing a solution to the inconvenience and difficulties faced by elderly people. The project; which is an electronic device supporting the needs of elderly person, is developed - primarily - to provide assistance to brush teeth, supplying drinking water, food and supply of medicine with different alerts properties. In addition to this, the system provides support to the relatives and friends of the old person when there is a shortage of materials or in case of failure to consume medicine in time by sending a corresponding SMS. The system developed can also be easily extended to support new requirements, with minor modifications in the design or algorithm.
