Centre for Postgraduate Studies and consultancy has been established with the objective of managing and operationalising the postgraduate programmes at MEC. The department was conceived in 2007 when the new batch of students joined the Masters Programme at MEC. The department operates in collaboration with faculty members from different departments at MEC.

The centre offers MBA (IT) and MSc (IT) and MSc in Electronics Engineering programmes in academic partnership with Coventry University, UK. Each post-graduate (PG) programme can be completed in a years’ time in full-time mode and in two years’ time in part-time mode. However, it must be noted that MEC offers the programmes in the part-time mode only.

Currently the programmes are attended by middle and senior level managers from different sectors and IT staff from various Ministries and private organisations including Ooredoo, Omantel, PDO, Halliburton, Bank Muscat, National Bank of Oman, Orix Oman, OAMC, etc. to name a few.

The main objective of the department is to achieve the organisational vision of Inspiring creative minds and the mission of achieving excellence in developing human resources, creating knowledge, and active community engagement for the immediate society and the world at large through enhanced student experience. Therefore the department aims to provide students with an environment where they learn strategic and practical aspects of management, organisations and technology that are relevant to their area of work.

The specific aims of the department are:

a) To provide comprehensive education to students at postgraduate level, with specific opportunities for personal development and functional specialisation, and to prepare them for employment in managerial positions;
b) To consolidate and further develop skills and knowledge acquired through previous study and experience and to enhance the students' transferable and professional skills with a view to augment their wider employment prospects;
c) To enhance the students’ analytical, critical communication and presentation skills, in the context of the modules taught, and to help them relate and apply these aspects to the challenges faced by business managers;
d) To enable the students to address the central problems of applied research in areas relating to management of information and to enable them to operate as effective independent applied researchers and/or consultants in their chosen specialised areas;
e) To develop the students’ knowledge of business environment, nature and scope of business strategies and operations;
f) To equip students with the ability to critically analyse the potential benefits to business through the application of information technology, business analysis, and model-building;
g) To provide relevant and topical subject content, particularly relating to development and deployment of computer-based information systems and operations, for personal and professional development, and to update them on best practices from around the world;
h) To provide the students an opportunity to understand theories, concepts and issues associated with planning, implementation and management of information systems (IS) / information technology (IT) functions in an organisation;
i) To instill an awareness of the need for cost-effectiveness as well as process/system integration within managerial settings and to provide the students with a sound understanding of business functions and business strategies;
j) To produce a highly skilled business professional who can make effective functional contributions in the areas of marketing, finance, human resources management, etc. apart from contributing to IS/IT functions.

The department offers three PG programmes, namely, Masters of Business Administration in Information Technology , Masters of Science in Information Technology and Masters of Science in Electronic Engineering
The centre collaborates with other academic departments at MEC for delivery of PG modules. Further engagement of industry experts and personnel is an important element of the programme.
Specialised workshops enable enhanced learning on the programme. Workshops ranging from management issues to technological developments help students engage with industry experts and in-house experts. Some of the workshops are hands-on that help students enhance their knowledge about specific technological systems..
  1. Faculty members from Department of Computing, Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering and the Department of Management Studies and  provide support and advice to facilitate learning for students on the PG programme.
    • Support beyond the classroom is offered by the concerned faculty to students who seek such help on academic issues.
    • Additional workshops are provided to students on developing and enhancing research skills and academic writing.
    • Support and counselling is provided to students who need specialised advice in modules or other related issues by the Programme Manager.
    • Academic advising to students is provided by MEC faculty to support them in academic issues and to help them in the successful completion of the programme.
  2. The centre also offers dissertation/project guidance for students on PG programmes to enable them to complete their dissertations/projects successfully.
The centre is well established with sufficient facilities to enable effective teaching and learning. It also has access to modern classrooms for delivering lessons; a well-stocked library with adequate print, online and audio visual learning materials and a number of computer and design labs for practical work, online learning, and hands-on experience.

The databases provided by the library allow students to access reputed journals from within as well as outside the campus.

Online Moodle (learning management system) enables students to have module related information available 24/7, even from their home.

Members of the centre have been able to convert students’ dissertations and projects into research papers. These research papers have been either presented in international conferences or at the MEC student conference. Further, some of the research work of the students, in collaboration with the faculty members, has been published in international journals. This adds a lot of value to the work of the students who understand the importance of research in academia.
One of the best practices of the PG department is that industry representatives are invited into classes and guest speakers’ seminars are organised. This brings a lot of industry inputs to the students for discussion and further consideration within the class.
The centre takes pride in stating that its teaching philosophy is manifested in its pedagogy.
The centre plans to diversify in terms of the programmes offered and in the levels of expertise available within the department. The centre expects to roll out more specialised programmes at the postgraduate level to keep pace with the job market, demands of the country and international developments.
The centre is also keen on conducting professional development activities to promote teaching and learning skills in faculty members. The department members look forward to more research and publication in collaboration with the students.
