Mathematics, plays a vital role in technological advancements. At the undergraduate level, Mathematics provides an excellent basis for graduate work in engineering, computer science, business management etc. It is also crucial for employment in fields like systems analysis, operations research, or actuarial science where mathematical reasoning is essential.

In MEC, the Department of Mathematics and Applied Sciences (MASC) supports the Department of Computing, Department of Electronics & Communication, Department of Management Studies, Department of Civil Engineering, and Centre for Records Management and Archival Studies. The Department provides students with basic and advanced mathematical skills that help them attain a better understanding of and expertise in areas like computer science, telecommunications, and civil engineering.

• To equip students with the basic concepts and techniques in Mathematics, Statistics and Physics in order to promote critical thinking and develop analytical abilities.
• To provide the required support for the programs offered in the College.
• To help students with their preparation for modules involving Mathematics, Statistics, and Physics.
• To promote problem-solving skills.
• To inspire students to appreciate the power of Mathematics and related disciplines.
• To encourage students to become competent in the use of mathematical software as an effective tool for computation and modelling.
• To motivate students to participate in relevant events organised by other Higher Education Institutions.
• To nurture the ability to express ideas precisely, consolidate and interpret data, draw logical conclusions and to generalise.
• To enable students to become competent in applying Mathematical techniques in other disciplines.

The Department supports the programs offered by the Department of Computing, Department of Electronics & Communication, Department of Management Studies, Department of Civil Engineering, and Centre for Records Management and Archival Studies.

The Department also offers modules in the General Foundation Program (GFP) in three levels. The GFP prepares students for undertaking higher level Mathematics courses offered in the undergraduate programmes.

• The Department extends its support to students beyond the classroom through the Math and Science Club.
• The Math Referral Centre, under the aegis of the Department, supports and trains the students of MEC as well as Math tutors from various local community schools as part of its social outreach program.
• The Department of Mathematics and Applied Sciences has well-equipped computer laboratories, which provide hands-on experience for students studying various modules in Mathematics and Statistics. These aid the development of numeracy skills, problem solving ability and critical thinking.
• MATLAB and SPSS are used with MS Excel in laboratory sessions.
• The Department has also established an Engineering Science and an Engineering Physics laboratory which have facilities for conducting various basic to advanced level experiments.
• Classroom Presenter and simulation software are used for classroom delivery to enhance students’ learning experience.
• For the first time in the Sultanate of Oman, an inter-collegiate Mathematics Competition was held in MEC.
• Task-based exercises are given to students in the Foundation programme which enable them to apply mathematical concepts to real-life situations and present the results.
• Research papers have been presented in international conferences in Brunei, UAE, Jordan, India and USA and published in international journals.
• Two members of the faculty have successfully completed their Masters program in Statistics – one from the University of West England, U.K. and the other from the University of Wollongong (UOW), NSW, Australia.
• One of the members of the faculty has successfully completed the Masters program in Mathematics from the University of Kent, UK.
• Four members of the faculty have completed their PG Diploma in Higher Education offered by Coventry University, UK.
• One of the faculty members has successfully defended his Ph.D. viva voice examination.
• The department has been offering services in the statistical analysis of data for the different units of the College.
• In-house workshops in SPSS have been conducted by the Faculty of the Department.
• In-house seminars on Omanisation and Tablet PC were presented.
• Lecture notes for two modules were prepared in e-book format.
• Innovative methods of teaching were introduced. They include the use of animation and poster presentations.
• State-of-the-art Technology in Teaching like Classroom Presenter with Tablet PC and Simulation Software are being used for some of the modules.
• The Math and Science Club conducted an exhibition for two days during the event “Math and Science Day”. It also organized the “Robotic Designing Competition” and workshops for the students.
• The Math Referral Centre organised a daylong event “Math Teachers Gathering” in which two technical sessions on Using Technologies for Math Education and SPSS for statistical analysis were conducted for school teachers from the local community as a part of the community outreach program.
• Organising workshops for students and faculty members through the Math and Science Club.
• Developing research and publishing papers in International Journals. The research interests of the Department are in the following areas:
  1. Challenges in Teaching Mathematics:
  2. To enquire into the learning strategies used by students and determine the kind of interventions required.
  3. To explore the possibilities of using modern technology in Mathematics Education.
  4. To improve Fuzzy Optimisation Techniques and its applications to Engineering
  5. Mathematical connections in art, music, and science
  6. Student performance in a topic or module taught
  7. Mathematical and statistical methods for compiling quarterly national accounts series
  8. Pedagogical Innovations
  9. Neural Networks
• To enhance student experience by strengthening the Math Reference Centre resources and developing lecture videos.
• Engagement in community outreach programs.
