Exciting MEC experience for BSM students

BSM students at Middle East College

Middle East College (MEC) hosted a group of 4 students from the British School Muscat (BSM) from 29th April to 1st May 2018 as part of their 3-day training programme designed to develop their personal and social skills. The programme gave the students the opportunity to explore various operations in a higher education institution where they gained valuable experience through hands-on training in the systems and processes at various academic support and professional services departments in the college.

The Student Success Centre (SSC), MEC, which is equipped to bolster MEC students towards success, introduced the visiting students to various activities, such as analyzing different scenarios related to student problems and identifying the best solutions to tackle the same. The students were engaged in a training session named “Know Your Mind”, which introduced them to strategies for enhancing their positive thinking, which is a key ingredient for success.   The staff in the library introduced the students to various library activities like circulation of books, cataloging and shelving the library materials, and managing e-resources. With the Media and Communication Office, the students learned about the processes involved in communication, public relations and marketing with a special focus on traditional media and social media. They were also introduced to the activities of the International Office, which is the designated entity to provide overall support to International Students in the college. One of the exciting opportunities the students had, as part of their training, was to actively take part in organizing one of the college events. They also prepared a mock press coverage to promote the event. The students had a glimpse of various admission related processes with the Admission Office. The Registration Office introduced the students to various systems and procedures in the office including the process of securely filing student records.

Pooja Krishnan, Head of Student Success Centre, commented: “MEC hosted BSM students to provide them an opportunity to familiarize with the different administrative departments of the institution and give them a flavour of the working environment at MEC. The students were enthusiastic about the hands-on experience of the processes and eager to be involved with the real-time scenarios in an institution. The aim of the programme was to make them understand how theoretical concepts are put into practice in an organisation and it was successfully accomplished. MEC is happy and appreciative that the BSM students undertook the exercise with vigor and zest and we look forward to similar associations in future also”.

MEC is keen to engage with the youth and share its knowledge, experience, and expertise with them, on various topics that interest them. The college engages with schools in Oman in activities like community outreach events, training sessions, workshops and others, in addition to the career guidance fairs organized by the schools, in which the college participates. It is worth mentioning that all the administrative departments in the college are ISO 9000:2015 certified.
