The Environmental Engineering and Management program builds upon concepts of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and basic Engineering with specialized study in Environmental Engineering. Environmental Engineering and Management is a challenging, demanding and rewarding profession, and will enable students to contribute to the present and future well-being of modern and developing societies throughout the world. Throughout the Environmental Engineering and Management programme students will study modules that will give them the necessary skills to analyse, design and manage solutions for innovative and complex engineering problems as a basis for future leadership in the Environmental Engineering and Management profession.
Environmental Engineering is the application of Science and Engineering principles for improving the environment (air, water, and/or land resources), to provide potable water, unpolluted air and habitable land for human and animal habitation and to investigate the possible remedies for reclaiming polluted sites. Environmental Engineering also involves design and application of technology, including the development of new materials, in support of the principles of sustainability and green manufacturing.
Candidates seeking admission to the programme mentioned should possess a General Education Diploma (Equivalent to 12 years of schooling or equivalent qualification approved by the Ministry of Education, Oman) in the Science stream with at least 65 % mark in both Pure Math and Physics. Further, the student should complete the General Foundation Programme (GFP) or its equivalent.
Students who do not possess a GFP certificate or an equivalent certificate may take MEC placement test. The placement test determines proficiency levels in English, Pure Math and Computing component.
English Language in the GFP can be exempted on producing IELTS (International English Language Testing System) certificate with a score of 5.5 and above, a TOEFL equivalent or an equivalent international certification
Computing component of the GFP can be exempted if the candidate has successfully completed the ICDL or IC3 or any equivalent international diploma in IT skills.
A score of 60% and above in MEC placement test in each of the component would enable the student for exemption from General Foundation programme.
Environmental Engineers work in a wide variety of industries, including Chemical, Municipalities, Research Establishments, Water/Wastewater treatment, designing treatment technologies and facilities, mining, and manufacturing, and can be involved in hazardous waste remediation, air pollution control, facilities planning, environmental consulting firms, assessing waste management strategies, developing clean energy alternatives, desalination, and providing safe drinking water. This programme will also open up new opportunities for entrepreneurs and improve the present opportunities.
